I was shredding old tax forms today. Do I know how to spend a Sunday, or what? I had the music cranking and was singing along to "I've Been Everywhere" by Johnny Cash. It occurred to me that it was a perfect time to be meditating: mindless task, mindful moments. Until the shredder gets jammed.
But instead of breathing or sensing, I was occupying my mind with the music around me. Music has been a big part of my life and I've been collecting songs and albums that remind me of all significant and insignificant events. So when I listen to it now, memories are triggered.
But what is a memory besides a story we tell ourselves?
And what good does it do if it keeps us from living in the present moment?
No, I am not deleting my iTunes library, but I do think I will self-impose some quiet times in the upcoming week. Just to see what happens.
